In an attack on free movement, Europhile Mr Macron said he will restrict the foreign workers in France if they failed to pay full French labour taxes.

The east Europeans, who are often employed in the building trade under a special EU regulation on temporary contract, are subject to their home country’s payroll taxes rather than the higher charges to French workers.

Beata Szydlo, Poland’s prime minister, has accused Mr Macron of “hostility” after the French president said eastern European governments and others treated the EU “like a supermarket”.

Poland has refused to accept any migrants from states under pressure in the EU’s migration crisis as thousands of migrants have been dispersed throughout France.

Eastern European countries should not be able to pick and choose parts of EU membership they liked without taking into account the bloc’s values, said Mr Macron.

The French president campaigned his way to office heavily on the future of the bloc.
